What is the difference between Micro Set and Micro Sol? 🚂

Micro Set and Micro Sol are two distinct but complementary decal setting solutions produced by Microscale Industries. After all painting has been finished it is best to give the model a gloss varnish before applying decals . This has three distinct advantages, firstly it helps protect the paint scheme already applied. Secondly, most gloss varnishes will attempt to 'Self-level' on the surface of the model which allows for better adhesion of decals and finally, gloss varnishes help to hide any transparent carrier film of the decal on the surface of the model. Once the varnish has been applied then we can look at applying the decals. Micro set works by gently softening decals which helps them to better conform to the model surface. Firstly apply a little Micro Set to the intended location before applying the decal. Once the decal is in place another gentle coat of Micro Set can help with the decal adhesion and allows the decal to 'contour' by more closely following the surface of the model. The decal may struggle to conform in the case of highly curved or irregular surfaces as the tension of the carrier film provides a little too much rigidity to allow the decal to properly contour. In this case, we can use Micro Sol as this will soften the carrier film and allow it to more readily conform to the model surface. As its name suggests Micro Sol contains a solvent and is the stronger of the two solutions. It is important to bear this in mind as too much Micro Sol can significantly weaken the decal leading to decal disintegration. The key to effective use of Micro Sol is to apply a small amount and then gauge its effectiveness. This patient and measured approach will inevitably produce fantastic results even with the most challenging of decal applications . Once all decals are in place it is a good idea to apply a coat of gloss varnish . This will help by hiding any lingering areas of transparent carrier film and will also help lock-in and protect the decals should the model then need to be handled on a regular basis. If the model requires a matt finish then a final flat varnish can be applied to complete the build. Micro Set also has another use in that it can help to remove unwanted decals by gently softening them to the point where they can safely be removed with a toothpick or hobby knife. In most cases, this may take more than one application so it is important to be patient and monitor the effectiveness of the Micro Set application and apply additional coats as necessary. Micro Set and Micro Sol are highly beneficial in creating realistic-looking decals for that 'painted-on' effect. They are both strong chemical formulas and as such reward a patient and methodical application process. Used carefully they produce very striking results allowing decals to follow and contour into recessed panel lines and conform to even the most challenging of surfaces.
