The Chinle mudstones are among the most colorful of geological strata. Here they show off shades of red, purple, yellow, green and even blue. The Chinle is a very widespread layer, found in Petrified Forest, Painted Desert, Canyonlands and here in Arizona near the Utah border. In some places it contains petrified wood. This location is in Arizona near the Utah border. It is overlain by the red Moenave and Kayenta formations.
