PLEASE READ FULL DESCRIPTION- I get a multitude of questions from other spoon carvers regarding the finish on my spoons. I always tell them you need to start with a razor sharp hook and Sloyd (see my other listings for maintenance items for these tools). Once your tools are up to par and your skills are equally sharp, there’s another important step that should be taken after you’ve finished the knife work- burnishing. So what does it mean to burnish a spoon? Basically, you’re compressing the fibers to create the smoothest possible surface without sanding. This is done by rubbing an extremely hard and extremely smooth object on all surfaces of your spoon (with the exception of the chamfers. The end result is the best natural sheen you can get with very little effort. The burnishing tools I offer are made from various natural minerals and as such, the COLOR/MINERAL MAY VARY. Their glass-like surface will ensure your finished spoons are much smoother than a knife finish alone will produce. Tool is usually around 4.5” but this can vary from one to the next. Most gradually taper from roughly 3/4” to 1/2”. These burnishers are made from natural minerals and have a glass-like consistency. If dropped or too much pressure is applied, they can break just like a ceramic one would. Please be mindful of the amount of pressure you’re using when burnishing your spoons and always brace/support the entire length of the tool with your hand.
