This vintage bolo tie is made via a process called sterling silver overlay, in which the designs--in this case, a cow's skull in the foreground, with village homes, hogan, and cliffs in the middle- and background--are cut out of one piece of silver and laid atop another piece. The cut-out areas are oxidized to give depth and texture. The Hopi developed silver overlay, although Navajo silversmiths also began to make pieces using this method.
