The name goes back to a historical Schmincke product: this shellac ink, also known as Chinese ink, was already available in the Schmincke range in 1912 as Indian Ink. Shellac, a resin, is a historical natural binder that ensures waterproof drying and a special silky sheen of the ink.

Since the ink is water-based you can dilute the ink with water to create more tonal effects.

Shake before use. Clean tools immediately after use with water (and soap).
Not to be used for fountain pens.
