To break in a new wheel, turn the buffer on and use the wheel rake to remove loose threads and soften the cloth wheel (followed by a quick trim of stray threads with a scissorsafter you've turned the buffer off, of course!). Even after wheels have been broken in and done a lot of buffing jobs, the wheels still need raking and trimming now and then.
