This lovely Victorian box was made by the firm founded by William Muller in London and is of a very high quality. As you can imagine with a name like Muller the gentleman wasn’t English but came from Germany. There were many businesses in London that were owned by Germans and if we remember that we actually had quite a few German Kings this is not that surprising. Indeed one of the most influential businesses supplying artists starting in the late 18th century was also founded by a German named Ackermann. This man must have given a lot of confidence to those who came after him as he was enormously successful. Mr Muller must have perhaps sought to emulate him as his company were to have branches in London and Birmingham and were truly successful selling all sorts of items for the artist that were of a really good quality. This box is no exception. I believe it is as sound as the day it was made and opens and closes exactly as it should. Being of a higher quality this box has spring powered bars to hold the pans in place which of course is very desirable in that they hold the pans very securely and being non detachable cannot be lost. The box does have a few dings here and there and some internal paint loss. However we shouldn’t fall into the trap of thinking that because there’s some paint missing it’s usefulness as an artists tool is somehow compromised. This box will serve its new owner as good as it served its first owner probably 120 years or more ago. The box has a full set of pans and although I can’t say with certainty that these are the ones supplied with the box I can say that all of them are ceramic. If you’ve never encountered ceramic pans please take my word when I say that they are wonderful. They last and last and of course can easily be washed out and reused over and over again. This is a wonderful box that is filled with history and future usefulness and if looked after will last a very another hundred years. Roughly, 22 cm 8cm
