The term hanji translates to “paper from Korea” or “Korean paper,” specifically traditional paper handmade from the inner bark of the paper mulberry plant. Paper Mulberry is found commonly throughout Asia, but is localized in Korea to the foothills of the nation’s many mountain ranges. Hanji has an ancient and extensive history ranging in application from clothing to flooring and even armor! Like most mulberry papers, Korean Hanji paper is made from the soft, inner bark of the paper mulberry plant. The harvested bark is boiled to soften the fibers and remove impurities. Natural extracts from the Hibiscus Manihot plant helps the mulberry fibers spread evenly in the water to create crisp and uniform Hanji sheets with multi-directional grains. Known in Korea as Unyongji, this variety of hanji paper is very similar to Thai Unryu Paper, with cloud-like mulberry inclusions embedded throughout the sheet. It weighs only 35 grams per square meter, but this tissue-weight Korean paper is known for its incredible strength and longevity. This roll features a white mulberry base with fine wild grass inclusions and seeds. Measuring 17 inches wide by 65 feet long, this tissue-weight Hanji paper roll is perfect for shoji screens, chine-colle, printing, lampshades, and fine wrapping paper.
