The original Mayflower carried the Pilgrims to New England in 1620. After a voyage of 66 days, the 102 weary travelers finally sighted land at the tip of Cape Cod. They scouted for a suitable place to settle and finally decided upon Patuxet, known to the English as Plymouth. In 1955-7, a reproduction, Mayflower II, was built in Brixham, England. She was intended as a gift to America in appreciation of US assistance to Great Britain during WWII. A specially selected crew sailed the ship across the Atlantic, arriving in June of 1957. Mayflower II is now part of Plimoth Plantation, the living history museum of 17th-century Plymouth, Massachusetts.Finished sewn size 4" by 4" on 18 count Charles Craft fabric. She was a medium-size merchant vessel of the seventeenth century, but her cargo was far from ordinary. Aboard the Mayflower were 102 passengers, known today as the Pilgrims, who fled religious persecution in Europe for freedom in the New World.
